is it wrong that i just LOVE these? they're so futuristic and clean-looking. you just need the absolute starkest of minimalist outfits to go with -- dark washed skinny jeans and something with a dolman sleeve on top to give that airy, outer-space feel some depth. add a pair of plastic-framed, oversized sunglasses with a rosy tinted lens and it's like you just walked out of woody allen's sleeper and onto the runway.

monday funday: because it's snowing and i'm antsy

to entertain myself (see also: distract myself from the fact that it's snowing, i've still got 2 1/2 days before my vacation, and i worked out and got all sweaty before finding out my town is having water pressure issues), and hopefully to also entertain you, i decided to try on and take photo booth pictures of the new top i got from asos.com. this sort of sheer cut-out, more-material-doesn't-mean-MORE-material trend for spring/summer 2011 does wonders for a girl's midsection.

i'm very excited by this.

that honeysuckle is the pantone equivalent of nars orgasm blush, regatta makes me long for the beach by my house in the summer, and i want to dip everything i own in that gorgeous, soft, pillowy lavender. and i'm not gonna lie, toss coral rose, peapod, and beeswax in a wok, serve it over silver peony, and you've got a whole lot of delicious. this color set for spring 2011 makes me oh-so-happy.

thirsty thursday: baby, it's cold outside

i know they seem totally impractical, but i'm newly obsessed with those adorable, tiny little half-scoop shorty gloves that show off a dainty wrist. they just seem so simultaneously demure and provocative that it drives me completely insane.

as i've mentioned before, ASOS is my new favorite obsession, and they have no shortage of adorable little ladylike gloves.

i loooove how these scoop up a bit on the wrist; it's like having a sexy little slit in an otherwise office-appropriate pencil skirt. and the color is fantastic. i'm a big fan of the brightly colored glove to offset otherwise drab winterwear.

monday manifesto: office holiday party attire

it's monday of the week that everyone is getting toasty with their colleagues--and no, i don't mean warm. in the spirit of the holiday, i thought i'd run through some dos and don'ts when it comes to dressing for such affairs. the line between extra-festive and inappropriate can be an easily blurred one, particularly when alcohol and lampshades are involved. so, to ensure that your job is safe and sound post-chrismakwanzukkah, read on and apply accordingly.

1. dress as if you're going to meet the sibling of your signifcant other at a semi-formal dinner.
what does this mean? i think meeting your boyfriend/girlfriend's sister/brother is the perfect analog to the office holiday party. you can have a bit more fun with your outfit than, say, meeting the parents, but you still want to make sure you're giving off a good, modest impression. don't choose anything slutty, slovenly, or simply lacking in personality.


2. a little bit of color and sparkle is fine; a red and green sequined gown is not.
everyone loves to wear red and green and gold and have shimmery baubles all over. don't overdo it, lest someone think you are the christmas tree and try to impale the top of your head with a giant star.



runway, yes. office, not so much.


3. this is not the time for jeans.
even if your office allows denim, the holiday party is a time to show that you care enough that your employer is throwing a party for everyone to dress up a little bit for it. it's impolite to be underdressed, and in the absence of exact instructions, always better to overdress.

4. test things out in lighting similar to your office, if you are planning to wear something new.
i know this sounds a bit extreme and silly, but i had a fantastic argyle sweater that, in my apartment, looked perfectly fine, but under the harsh fluorescent lighting of my office, became instantly sheer. this is not a good look to have in front of your boss's boss's boss.




don't let this happen to you.


5. bring a tide to go stick.
if you're like me, if you're eating it, you're probably also wearing it. these things save my LIFE.

beyond that? enjoy, but don't over-enjoy; booze at holiday parties is not there for hydration purposes. don't be a cocktail-shrimp-hog, and do make sure to make the new guys and girls feel welcome. make sure you have a quality chat with the boss and compliment his ho-ho-ho necktie or her light-up snowman earrings. and, most importantly, have a wonderful holiday season full of compliments on your fabulous office-party attire.

...and again, by "tomorrow," i can sometimes mean "in the foreseeable future." clearly, it was imperative that i go out dancing this weekend; as an aside, i wore a sequined skirt, and ripped-up israeli army tee shirt, my grandmother's huge star of david pendant, and fishnets. i have a thing for dressing on theme. happy hanukkah.

speaking of happy hanukkah, you know what's a great gift that also tastes delicious on latkes and looks fashionable in a decorative gourmet gift basket (i'm a big fan of bringing a holiday hostess a nice gift basket or bottle of wine instead of flowers, that way she can enjoy it herself and doesn't have to attend to it right away)?

monday manifesto: sometimes fabulousity is fate

so anna is my colleague and i love her like my sister from another mister. she's smart, funny, gorgeous, silly, and everything a fashionista could ask for in a cubicle-mate. what's great about anna is that not only is she fun to work with in my *cough cough* real job, she's super into fashion too. this only slightly reduces our general productivity due to excessive amounts of communal online shopping. only slightly.

today, anna came in looking SUUUUUPER CUTE.

she is so much cuter than the giant pile of recycling under my desk. next to the space heater. obviously.

it wasn't until we'd been talking for a few minutes that she mentioned that she had unintentionally put on textured tights and a differently textured skirt, and wasn't sure about the results. to be honest, i think we have a rare and wonderful case of accidental fabulosity here. because i think they really, really work.

i love the mixture of textured solids that's going on here. this whole breaking-all-the-rules stuff is actually being done quite intelligently by most of the designers i've seen, and even mostly by the people i've seen out and about actually doing it. as i always say, you have to know the rules to break them well, so let's keep doing it that way and avoiding any fashion faux pas.

significant sunday: the end of an era

i believe your decor and home say as much about you as your wardrobe. what gets interesting is when your decor is the artistic equivalent of having your cousin's kid's report card on your fridge; vaguely uncomfortable, raises some awkward questions, but you feel bad about taking it down.

prior to today, my poor roommate and i had been subject to a painting done by our landlord's ex-girlfriend. this was a painting of, i shit you not, a giant pink vagina.

no, seriously.

the first conversation i had with anyone coming into my apartment was "hey! how are you! welcome! yes, that's a vagina. can i hang your coat?"

still don't believe me?

i told you so. 

now, we didn't really have anything better to hang there, and we never really got around to it. finally, today, we said enough was enough. the reign of the giant pink vagina had to end. it was really saying bad things about who my roommate and i are, as people. i mean honestly. anyone who sat in the chair underneath it looked like they'd just been birthed.

so, off to the dress code, where i can just as easily find amazing housewares as i can lucky brand jeans or a vintage brahmin leather bag for $30 or less. and viola. we now rival versailles in both class and glass.

so. much. BETTER.

it's a very important day in a girl's life when a fantastic furniture find is as exciting as jeans or a purse. my membership card to the grown-ups club is totally in the mail, i can feel it.

something for sunday: my holiday hotlist, beauty edition

there are many stores into which it is a bad idea to send me. sephora is quite possibly the worst of them.

on saturday, during one of two amazingly fun style consultations i had scheduled, i walked into sephora, innocently thinking i could take a moment to glance at a product i'd seen in the recent catalogue that might interest my client. after five full, silent minutes of standing in front of the nars display, mouth agape, eyes glazed, i decided it would behoove us both if we made a quick exit; after purchasing a multiple orgasm, that is.

in the spirit of the holiday season, a time when it's most fun to have shimmery eyes, glowing skin, and full, red lips, a time when you never know what size your cousin's girlfriend is and beauty products are a phenomenally underrated gift idea, a time when some of you out there might be wondering just what to get for your favorite friendly fashionista, i share with you my holiday hotlist, the beauty edition. the majority of this list is luxurious but basic products on which perhaps a woman wouldn't want to splurge for herself, but are almost universally flattering and useful (with a few fun, funky, fabulously unique items sprinkled in, of course).

over menswear and heavy eyebrows. i find that often i'll have a very visceral "NO" reaction to a thing, and then end up wanting to make sweet love to it later. i won't even begin to psychologize that.
